Cheryl Morningstar was one of the pioneers of the Nordic scene in Whistler. She made incredible contributions to the Whistler cross-country community when it was first developing. She devoted hundreds of hours to initiating the Jackrabbit program, Track Attack, the Whistler Nordics Ski Club, and organizing the Whistler Loppet at Lost Lake. She organized coach certification courses, club programs, designed club kits, and found sponsorship money to keep it all going. Her work laid the foundation for the kids’ programs being offered in the community today.
Coming from the love of Alpine skiing, this was new ground for her but she really felt it was something important for the kids to do and the community to have. Snow, sun or rain Cheryl made these programs work and flourish. She was a natural organizer, and her attention to details always paid off in things running smoothly. Cheryl spent many hours at Lost Lake working with whatever the winter presented. At times the conditions weren’t the nicest to be cross country skiing in, but she always managed to keep a smile, be positive, and be encouraging and supportive to all.
With the development of Whistler Olympic Park providing more terrain and opportunities for youth to participate, it gave Cheryl happiness to see the programs grow. That is what she wanted. She would be extremely happy to see all the kids in the various programs now, and the occasional original Whistler Nordic kit still being used.
Cheryl will be missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, and the Sea to Sky Nordic community.
