Local Skiers Qualify for BC Winter Games

Local youth athletes have been training hard while vying for a spot to represent their provincial race zone at the BC Winter Games at the end of February in Quesnel, BC.  Qualifying events for Zone 5 (West Vancouver and North) took place on December 30th as well as January 6th and 7th at Whistler Olympic Park and the training and performance of six corridor skiers was strong enough to earn them a spot.

Spud Valley athletes Namumiskoo Lammens and Veya Stevens both qualified for the U-14 female placements after racing hard through some tough rainy conditions on Dec 31st, where the unseasonable mild temperatures and lack of snow forced officials to make last-minute modifications to the racecourse.

Local Sea to Sky Nordics biathletes Claire Benson, Holden Wilson, Max Murray, and Reed Murray raced against other Zone 5 athletes over two cold days on January 6th and 7th, and all qualified in their Junior divisions for BC Winter Games. The conditions for the races were perfect after a recent snowfall dumped 40cm of cold snow at Whistler Olympic Park.

“The kids worked extremely hard at dryland training this fall and it was quite exciting to see the kids from the Coast Corridor United training group all perform so well in their respective disciplines,” said Dan Wilson, President of Whistler Nordics.

CCU: Coast Corridor United (CCU) is a collaborative effort between the 3 regional clubs to create a performance-focused cohort for U-12 to U-16 aged racers. Skiers from Spud Valley Nordics, Whistler Nordics, and Sea to Sky Nordics, have joined forces to develop the program with coaches, and technical direction under the banner of Coast Corridor United, administered by the Whistler Nordics Club.
